Cannon Nov 2019

Wow! Time flies! I cannot believe I have been in Rwanda for more than two months! It has been a time of growth and learning for me as I adjust to my teaching schedule, build relationships with the students, and experience all the curious challenges that go along with living in a new country. (I don’t know if my internal seasonal clock will ever not be confused by the fact that it is the middle of November and is 75 degrees outside with a yard of freshly mowed grass.)

It has been so fun digging into the Rafiki art curriculum and teaching creative projects to the students. I teach grades 1-9, and all approach art with enthusiasm and joy; every week we learn new art techniques, how art relates to history and everyday life, and how we can use our creativity as a form of communication and self-expression. Our Village recently received the new Sixth grade art curriculum, and the first lesson engaged students in the practice of looking around them with the eyes of an artist to see delight and beauty in every-day things. Today, they shared about the color of a beautiful flower they had never noticed before and the particular hue of the clouds at sunset.

During the last school break, some of the other missionaries and I took a trip to Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park. It was a hilly and winding five-hour drive to get there, but the rainforest was beautiful, wild, and hung with mist. We saw monkeys, rare birds, and a rushing waterfall. The rain held off long enough for us to experience the canopy walk—a suspension bridge hanging above the treetops. What a view! It was refreshing and exciting for me to see this special place that Rwanda is working hard to protect.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and encouragement! I am excited for the work I am doing here and for what Rafiki is doing in Rwanda. Thank you for your continued support and for partnering with me in this incredible journey! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!
