The young RICE Program in Zambia just completed its first 2019 term with thirty-nine students! Students in each one of Rafiki’s seven RICE programs enjoy lessons in content areas such as reading and math, instruction on how to write and prep for lessons, and daily Bible study. Their work is rigorous, but their reward is great. By God’s grace, six students graduated from the program in Zambia and are now prepared to teach in schools across the country!

Following the success of the first term, the Zambia RICE Program began to screen applicants for a second term. Karen and Richard Farrand, missionaries and teachers college deans, said, “Fifty plus shining faces of recent high school graduates from every part of Zambia descended upon our campus” in the hopes of being properly trained at Rafiki. They came with a hunger to learn and a readiness to show their skills; they came with a desire to transform Africa.

After a long interview and testing process, fifteen applicants were accepted to the program. The students hit the ground running, learning how to operate computers, write papers, and experience the beauty of music and art. They have studied algebraic equations and appreciated Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Moreover, the students are learning about God as they participate in Bible study and memorize Bible verses. At the Zambia RICE college, they will be transformed both educationally and spiritually—equipped to change the lives of students throughout Zambia.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2 ESV).
